    Educational Excellence
    In Our Schools

    The Wilson County Public School System (www.wilson.k12.nc.us) serves approximately 12,500 students in 3 high schools, 6 middle schools, and 14 elementary schools. Wilson Superintendent, Dr. Larry E. Price was named 2006 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year and 2006 Runner-Up for National Superintendent of the Year. Four private schools also exist in Wilson including Greenfield School (http://www.greenfieldschool.org/), Community Christian School (www.ccscyclones.com) and Wilson Christian School (www.wilsonchristian.com).

    Pursuing Higher Education
    Barton College (www.barton.edu) is a four-year liberal arts college offering a rich educational experience. Wilson Technical Community College (www.wilsontech.cc.nc.us) complements the educational resources of the area. Only 30 minutes away is East Carolina University and Brody School of Medicine. And nearby, the Triangle area is home to NC State University, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University.

    Recreation: Something for everyone
    A moderate year-round climate offers plenty of opportunity for recreation. Golf, tennis, swimming, boating, fishing, and baseball make Wilson a haven for sports lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Golfers can choose from three private courses and one public course. Lake Wilson and Buckhorn Reservoir offer a variety of boating, fishing and picnicking activities.

    Sports
    If you like sports, you know about Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, all home to several Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) teams. Wilson Tobs baseball is a summer collegiate Coastal Plain all-star team. Their home games are played at Fleming Stadium built in 1939 and renovated to seat approximately 4000 fans. Wilson's Burt Gillette Athletic Complex hosts several regional soccer tournaments including the U.S. Youth Soccer Association 2008 Southern Regional Championships.

    North Carolina Baseball Museum showcases baseball memorabilia from ball players that played in North Carolina like: Catfish Hunter, Hoyt Wilhelm, Gaylord Perry, Enos Slaughter, Rick Ferrell and Buck Leonard.

    Antique Shopping in Wilson

    Known as the 'City of Antiques', Wilson has over 30 stores offering classic antique design from the 18th and 19th century from all over the world. With 4 acres of antiques, Boone's Antiques www.boonesantiques.com is the largest store on the East Coast.

    Entertainment/Cultural Arts
    The Arts Council of Wilson is located in downtown Wilson in the original home of Branch Bank & Trust (BB&T) building built in 1903. The Arts Council of Wilson www.wilsonarts.com provides a variety of activities for all ages through arts and theatre camps, exhibits, workshops lectures and community events.

    Imagination Station is a children's hands-on science and technology museum with over 200 exhibits related to space, health, the environment and more. www.imaginescience.org

    The Boykin Center was originally a 1919 Vaudeville Theatre renovated in 1988 with plush seating for 650 people. Programming includes an annual theatre series and Act! For Youth showcasing the area's youth talent.

    Colorful "whirligigs" produced by local folk artist Vollis Simpson are erected throughout the downtown area which complement his Windmill Farm, a remarkable collection of over 30 elaborate whirligigs on Simpson's property. His whirligigs are nationally recognized and exhibited.

    Dining
    Wilson is famous for having the best barbecue in Eastern North Carolina featuring Parker's Barbecue, ranked by USA Today as one of the "10 Great Places to take an exit to good eating in the U.S." and Bill's Barbecue which caters nationally www.bills-bbq.com.
